Graphic Communications/Digital Media FAQs

Does my student need any previous experience before taking this class?
No. This program starts all students at the beginning of design.

If my student attends this course, should they go to college or straight to the workforce?
This is a good area where either would work. Students will have the experience to go straight to a job or they can go to college. Students will earn 9 college credit hours in this class over the 2-year period. These are Ivy Tech credits which are transferable.

How much homework can a student expect from this course?
Not much. Students will be using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. While in the class, students are able to download the software at home for free. If students become behind in the class, then they can work on projects at home.

What expenses will I incur? Fees, book rental or purchase, tool costs, etc.?
There are no expenses for this class.

Do I have to have a certain GPA to get into the class?
No. Students are not required to have a specific GPA to get into the class. Students will be required to have a certain GPA to take the college credit classes. If students do not have that GPA, then they will take a test to earn a specific score. If the score is not reached, students will be able to do an online remediation to bring the score up.

Is this class mostly drawing like an art class?
This class is designing to print. Designing to print requires students to be able to use words and text for signage, flyers, pamphlets, newsletters, banners, t-shirt design, etc. All design is done on the computer using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. Sketching is not part of this class.

What is the balance between printing and design?
There will be days when the entire day will be designing on the computer. Then there will be days where I will pull students to print all day. It will be mostly design on the computers. We do have large print jobs that require several students to work on printing.

Are internships available?
Yes. Internships are up to the student. Internships are not required but strongly recommended. After a student chooses a place to intern, I will contact the business to talk to the supervisor of the student to discuss the requirements of the program. I will then do periodic checks on the progress of the student at the internship.
